Cyprus, official known as the “Republic of Cyprus” is a Mediterranean island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the largest island in the region. It is about 240 km in length and 100 km at its widest point. On the north is Turkey about 75 km, Lebanon and Syria on the east and Israel on the south east with Egypt on the south. Cyprus a former British colony became independent in 1960. Cyprus with the population of about just over a million : 77% Greek, 18% Turkish and 5% others is divided into Turkish Cypriot north, calling itself Turkish Republic of Northern Island , covering the 37% of the total island and is only recognised by Turkey. Greek Cypriot or the Republic of Cyprus, the government is covering 59% of the total island in the south. UK holds a small area of the island as a sovereign military bases.
Nicosia is the capital of the nation as well as the largest city of the country. Cyprus has its own country’s map on its flag. Service sector controlled by the government is the major economy of the island: Tourism, financial services and real estate are the major and most important sectors. Communication service in the capital seems to be good in comparison to the other parts of island. Public transport is limited except Nicosia. Country with an area of about 9,000 Sq Km has total road of 14,000 Km, 2 international airports, 15 in total out of which 13 are paved runway, 9 helipads. Cyprus has compulsory military service for male once they reach their 18 birthday and women may volunteer for the service which could be for 25 months to 3 years.
