Shining Path

Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), is a Maoist guerrilla organisation in Peru, South America. The Shining Path was founded in the late 1960s by former university philosophy professor Abimael Guzmán. During its heyday in the 1980s, Shining Path was most freard rebels/terrorist organisation in the Latin America, waging with the Government of Peru. It did not only control the rural areas of Peru, but also attacked  and targeted  Lima, Peru’s capital city, promoting fears among many Peruvians that it might eventually take full control of the country.
The Maoist group killed about 70,000 people during their terror campaign in order to establish its Maoist government in the country. The Shining Path leader Guzman was arrested in 1992 and was sentenced by the military court for life. Since the capture of Guzman, the movement has weakened and confined to the jungle areas.
The orgainsation is listed as terrorist organisation by Peruvian Government, United States, European Union and Canada.
