Qantas is an Australian Airlines and the national flag carrier of Australia. It is the largest and the oldest Airlines in Australia and the second largest continually operating airlines in the world only after KLM Dutch. It is also the oldest airlines in English speaking country. It was founded in Winton, on the 16th of November 1920 in Queensland as Queensland And Northern Territory Ariel Services.
The airline was founded by Paul McGuiness, Hudson Fysh, Fergus McMaster and Arthur Baird. The airline’s first aircraft was an Avro 504K, which was purchased for £1425. The aircraft had a cruising speed of 105 kilometres per hour and it carried one pilot and two passengers. 84 year old outback pioneer Alexander Kennedy was the first passenger, receiving ticket number one.
Today, Qantas main hub is at Kingsford Smith Airport, Sydney Airport and Melbourne Airport. But, it also operates quiet a large number of international flights from Brisbane, Perth, London Heathrow, Los Angeles International Airport and Changi International Airport, Singapore. It also has its huge domestic presence in the cities like: Adelaide, Canberra and Cairns.
During the Sydney 2000 Olympic Qantas ads was promoted with Peter Allen’s ‘I still call Australia Home’ the spirit of Australia with Qantas flying over Sydney. It also sponsors Socceroos and Australian national soccer team. Since its introduction in 1944, the kangaroo logo of Qantas has gone four major changes.
Today, Qantas is known as world’s leading airlines flying to over 80 destinations in six continents, with over 230 aircraft. It has also added new Airbus 380 to its fleet, which had its first route from Melbourne to Los Angeles on the 30th of October 2008, followed by Sydney to LA.
