The Mossad , in full: HaMossad leModi’in uleTafkidim Meyuhadim in Hebrew and in English: Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations. But, commonly known as Mossad, which simply means institute or institution in Hebrew, is Israeli foreign intelligence service. It is the most important and one of the most famous of the five ingelligence organisations of Israel.
It is believed, Mossad consists of between 1,500 - 2,000 personnel, most of them who have served in IDF, as a part of national service. Mossad is responsible for: collecting information, analyzing intelligence, and perform special covert operations beyond its borders. It is active in most of the important countries of the world including Arab countries.
Mossad activity is diverse and varies from silent operations like: monitoring individuals and organisations, manipulating journalists, politicians and organisations, kidnapping and killing of individuals.
It has been regarded as one of the most effective and well-informed intelligence organisation in the world. But, everyone has faults which will lead to failures, like these ones of Mossad. Killing of an innocent Moroccan man in July 1973, in Norway, believing him to be one of the Palestinian involved in killing Israeli athletes in Munich 1972 Olympic games. Mossad, failed an assassination attempt on Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in the middle of the stree of Amman, Jordan.
But, by far Mossad can be given credit for one mission which took place in the year 1976. It was hostage rescue mission at Entebbe International airport, Uganda. Mission led by Lieutenant Colonel Johathan Netanyahu, who died in the mission. He was older brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, who later became the Prime Minister of Israel.
